To the guy on the Boston Metro,
I saw you at the State T-stop, about to get on the Orange line towards Oak Grove. Look, you might be rather beautiful with your tanned skin and chiselled arms and smooth blonde hair…but you’re a bit of an idiot. There is a reason the railway has a sign reading “DANGER No Trespassing Third Rail” and that reason is that a third rail is bloody dangerous. It’s carrying 600V of electricity (i.e. a LOT of electricity) and that is definitely enough to kill a person and on the Boston MBTA, that rail is uncovered. So why do I think you’re so stupid? Because you decided to climb down onto the tracks just to have a photo of you next to the warning sign. You might even have heard me scream a little bit when I realised what you were doing. Dude, seriously?
The thing I find weird though is that after you’d taken the photo and climbed out of the pit, nothing happened. Let’s just consider what would have happened if you’d made the same decision in London. Firstly, I wouldn’t have been the only person screaming. Secondly, the Transport Police would have descended upon you by the time you were crawling out and you’d have been hauled off for a severe telling-off and a large fine (at least). And I wouldn’t be surprised if this would have caused a delay to the trains and thus a huge inconvenience to the public. I know Boston is laid back but seriously?! How can something like that go unpunished?!?!
Anyway, dude, you were lucky that you didn’t get hurt but I’m sure that photo has done the rounds on a couple of your social networking sites and some other idiots might think it’s cool to have a similar photo. Good job!
Yours faithfully,
C
